- [2019 - WSAF Junior, Youth, Cadet and Senior World championships](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/2019-wsaf-junior-youth-cadet-and-senior-world-championships): The second Worldwide Sport Aikido Federation (WSAF) Junior, Youth, Cadet and Senior World championships were held in August 2019, at the Mesa College, San Diego, USA. Bradford juniors competed in the Under 10, Under 13 and Under 16 age categories, winning a total of 18 medals.
- [2019 BAA Junior Nationals](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/2019-baa-junior-nationals): The 2019 BAA Junior National Championship was held on Saturday 22nd June at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre, with Junior Aikidoka from Bradford, Leeds, Garforth/Wetherby/Harrogate & Ferrybridge (Yon Ju Hachi Aikdo) and Dublin taking part. It was a long day that started at 9:30am and didn’t finish until 7:30pm. There were amazing performances from all the Bradford juniors. The overall team trophy was awarded to the Dublin Tomiki Aikido club.

Members of the club were part of the BAA Team that took part in this championship.

The Championship team trophy was again won by the Yon Ju Hachi Aikdo.
- [2017 International Aikido Festival in Akita, Japan](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/2017-international-aikido-festival-akita-japan): The 12th International Aikido Festival was held in Akita, Japan, the birthplace of Tomiki Sensei and Oba Sensei. The host for this international festival was the Japan Aikido Association. Club members were part of the British Aikido Association (BAA) GB Team that competed at this international festival. For them, this was the first time they had been to an international competition in Japan. Although they were unable to replicate the success they achieved at the wsaf-junior-youth-cadet-and-senior-world-championships, the BAA Squad won gold in the Women’s Individual Randori and the Men’s Team Randori. - [WSAF -  2017 Junior, Youth, Cadet and Senior World championships](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/2017-wsaf-junior-youth-cadet-and-senior-world-championships): The Worldwide Sport Aikido Federation (WSAF) Junior, Youth, Cadet and Senior World championships were held in August 2017, at the University of East London – SportsDock. The WSAF is an organisation solely dedicated to providing space for open, fair, competitive Aikido according to the design and spirit of Kenji Tomiki Shihan. Over 200 Aikidoka from Great Britain, Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Japan, Netherlands, Russian Federation, Spain, Switzerland and the USA competed in the first ever WSAF World championship. - [2016 Junior/Youth European Championships](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/2016-junioryouth-european-championships): The 3rd Junior/Youth European Tournament was held over the weekend of 29th October at the English Institute of Sport (EIS), Sheffield, with over 150 junior and youth Aikidoka from clubs in Bradford, Dublin (Ireland), Leeds, Renshinkan (Manchester), Sheffield, Tanseikan (London), Yon Ju Hachi (Boston Spa Aikido Club) and Russia. Over the weekend, all the juniors demostrated awesome aikido, sportsmanship and showed they are a credit to thier clubs, coaches and parents. Here some photographs from the championship.

- [Garrett 5th Dan, Rajdeep 1st Dan.](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/garrett-5th-dan-rajdeep-1st-dan): The 2016 BAA Summer School (North) was again held at St Mary’s School, Ilkley. At the grading on Sunday, Garrett was promoted to 5th Dan and Rajdeep was promoted to 1st Dan. Congratulations to everyone (both adults and juniors) that were successful at the grading. The coaches at the Summer School were, Yoshiomi Inoue (7th Dan), Bob Jones (7th Dan), Phil Bird (5th Dan), Jim Bird (5th Dan), Garrett Baxter (5th Dan) and Neville Coupland (3rd Dan – Yoshinkan).

The overall team trophy was won by the Leeds Central Aikido club.
- [11th TAIN International Festival (2015 Aikido World Championships)](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/11th-tain-international-festival-2015-aikido-world-championships): The 11th TAIN International Festival (2015 Aikido World Championships) was held in Fiesch, Switzerland and was hosted by Tomiki Aikido Switzerland – Amicale Aikido Bex. Aikidoka from Belgium, Brazil, France, Georgia, Japan, Netherlands, Russia, Spain, Ukraine and USA took part in this international festival. The BAA team won a number of gold, silver and bronze medals. - [2014 BAA Junior Open (South)](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/2014-baa-junior-open-south): 2014 BAA Junior Open (South) was again held in the High Wycome Judo. 100 Junior Aikidoka from Bradford, Leeds, Wharfdale, Huddersfield, Eastleigh, Tanseikan, Greenhills Tomiki Aikdo (Dublin), Yon Ju Hachi Aikido (Boston Spa) and Shogun Aikido Kai (Herne Bay) taook part. Great day, lots of excellent aikido shown by the juniors.
- [2nd Junior and Youth Tomiki Aikido European Championship](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/2nd-junior-youth-tomiki-aikido-european-championship): In October, the 2nd Junior and Youth Tomiki Aikido European Championship was held in St Petersburg, Russia, with over 170 juniors competing. Juniors from a number of clubs in Yorkshire took part in this championship, competing as the BAA Yorkshire Team. The BAA Yorkshire Team did exceptionally well, making some of the finals and were a credit to their coaches and clubs. Here are some pictures from the championship. This year the instructors were Konaka San (JAA 6th Dan), Bob Jones (7th Dan), V. Fairchild (5th Dan) and Toni Davies (BAB). Konaka San taught Randori-no-kata focusing on practice for Randori. He showed how he looks to pin the uke’s weight to a point just in front of their foot and uses this pinned weight to perform the technique. In 2013, as well as being awarded his Dan Grade, Seb also competed in the 10th International Tournament (Kawasaki City, Japan) where he and Phil did reached the semi-finals of the Dan Junanahon event.

The annual event is known as ‘The Chapman Trail’, in honour of the Huddersfield Town’s legendary manager, Herbert Chapman and has raised approximately £1.2m for the Keep It Up campaign . For 2014, the Pedal4Pounds was a 250-mile bicycle ride from the Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium to Huddersfield Town Football Club. Phil being an Aikidoka, decided he would first cycle from Huddersfield to Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, before joining the other 300 Pedal4Pounds cyclists in the ride back from Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium to Huddersfield Town Football Club. - [2014 BAA Junior Open (North)](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/2014-baa-junior-open-north): On Saturday 22nd March, juniors from the Bradford Tomiki Aikido Club took part in the BAA Junior Open Championships (North) that was held at Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Bradford, competing against teams from Leeds, Harrogate, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Yon Ju Hachi (Boston Spa Aikido Club) and Wharfdale. The overall team trophy again went to the Leeds Club. A little over twenty years ago Gaz took over Bradford Tomiki Aikido club from Chandra Kaur as the coach and has shared the coaching role over those years with Jonathan Adsetts, Phil Hargreaves, Lee Mazacs and Kally Shergill to keep the club going.

- [2013 Junior Open Championships (South)](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/2013-junior-open-championships-south): On Saturday 23rd November, juniors from the Bradford Tomiki Aikido Club took part in the 2013 BAA Junior Open Championships (South) held at the High Wycombe Judo Centre, competing against teams from Eastleigh, Tanseikan (London & Bromley), Essex Aikido Club, Leeds, Huddersfield and Wharfdale. It’s a long drive down to High Wycombe, but it was well worth the journey as the juniors won medals in the Under 8, Under 12 and Under 16 age groups. The overall team trophy went to Huddersfield Tomiki Aikido Club, second was Leeds Aikido Club and third was Bradford Tomiki Aikido Club.

As there are no weight categories in Aikido randori, it’s possible for a much shorter and lighter Aikidoka (Norihiro Shimada) to come up against a much taller and heavier Aikidoka (Josh Ramey). But being taller/heavier doesn’t mean that you’ll win the bout because skill is an excellent equalizer, just look at the technique that Shimada uses to throw Ramey. - [2012 ETAN Championship in Russia](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/2012-etan-championship-in-russia): August 18th and 19th saw the 2012 ETAN European Championships being held in Moscow, Russia. Phil and 10 other members from the BAA went to Moscow to take part in this championship. In total the BAA team won 23 medals with Phil winning bronze as part of the 5 man randori team and bronze as part of a ninidori with Dan and Sarah. Here are some pictures from this championship.

Phil and Seb from Bradford Tomiki Aikido club took part in this championship. Overall Phil and Seb won the following medals at this championship. Phil and Seb won Gold in the Randori-no-kata (Embu) event Phil and Seb won Bronze in the Open Kata event Phil, Dan (York Aikido), Paul (Leeds Aikido) won Gold in the Nini Dori event. Phil won Silver in the individual Tanto Randori event Well done to Phil and Seb!

Everyone successfully passed their grading, David was awarded 5th Kyu (yellow belt), Dave was awarded 4th Kyu (orange belt), Amarbir was awarded 3rd Kyu (green belt) and Kally was awarded 1st Dan (black belt). Phil did a lot of break falls throughout the grading, hence the slightly “shattered” look.

The junior classes will now start 15 minutes earlier at 6:45pm and finish at 8:15pm. The adult classes will start at 8:45pm and finish at 9:45pm. - [Senior Kyu Grade Competition](https://bradfordaikido.co.uk/senior-kyu-grade-competition): In February, Justin, Garry, Kally and Amardeep competed in the Senior Kyu Grade Championship that was held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Amardeep came 2nd in the Randori-no-Kata event. Garry came 3rd in the Ninindori event and also come 4th in the Men’s Tanto event. Justin got through to the second round of the Randori-no-Kata event. Garry and Kally got through to the second round of the Open Kata event. Justin, Garry, Kally and Amardeep along with Lee and Garrett.
